Due to Lithuania's geographic location, the transport sector, particularly freight transit, is constantly growing and therefore playing a very significant role in the economy of the country. Freight shipments between Russia and the CIS (Commonwealth Independent States), and the West, are the core of the transit industry in Lithuania. Lithuania has only one major seaport, the Port of Klaipeda, which is the hub of the transport transit industry. It is the primary interest of Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications to improve competitiveness of the Klaipeda seaport in the forthcoming years.
After a decade of extensive investments on transport system modernisation, the technological level has been raised bringing the quality of infrastructure close to the standards of EU. The recent development projects were highway “Via Baltica” (Warsaw – Kaunas - Riga - Tallinn) and the shuttle freight “Viking” (Klaipeda-Odessa).
